The best book I've read on Leadership recently is "Captain Scott" by Ranulph Fiennes - a sensitive and insightful portrayal of a recently much maligned hero, also a great adventure story!

Next best and more down to earth and practical for most people in organisations would have to be "Next To Me" by David Jones, a fascinating tale of retail success, intertwined with personal triumph over human adversity.

For some fascinating insights into political intrigue, influencing people and upholding ethics and values, all with the historical background of ancient Rome, is "Imperium" by Robert Harris.

"Leading Strategic Change - Breaking Through the Brain Barrier". More readable than many books on change and does look at some different aspects, concentrating on and proposing some very practical people strategies. By Stewart Black and Hal Gregersen.

3 Commando Brigade  by Ewen Southby-Tailyour

For a genuine, immediate and in-depth understanding of the soldiers lot in close combat, forget the fictional accounts, forget the too short and sensational TV clips, and read this excellent book.
A wonderful, down to earth narrative of the Royal Marines 2007 tour of duty in Afghanistan. Inspiring stories of heroism on the front line, mixed with raw emotion, tragedy and compassion for the local people. While avoiding any political debate or commentary, the story still leaves you asking questions about the clarity and commitment of the real decision makers - the politicians.
At the same time you are left with great pride in the unswerving bravery and determination of the men on the ground, coping with limited resources, yet maintaining their humour, humanity and outstanding professionalism.
Having served with both the author and the Brigadier, who led the Marines in Helmand, I feel immense pride and am honoured to have known them.
